What You’ll Learn

A man with glasses and long hair tied back, wearing a black T-shirt, is standing and pointing at a whiteboard with musical notes and steps written on it. There is a digital piano and keyboard in front of him, and a poster behind him with the text "WAR IS OVER!" and a black-and-white abstract art piece on the wall.

Lesson 1: Foundations

We’ll do a quick dive into one of the most important systems in modern worship music - the Nashville Number System. We’ll start building scales and learn how to easily build chords, the building blocks of music.

A person with glasses and long hair tied back, standing in a room with a keyboard and a whiteboard, gesturing with their hands. The room features a round mirror, a plant, and a poster that reads 'WAR IS OVER!'

Lesson 2: Core Chords

In modern worship music, almost every song uses the same exact four chords. We will learn those and how to play them so that they: 1. sound incredible, and 2. are incredibly easy to play. Yes, it’s possible to sound amazing without years of work!

Lesson 3: Worship “Loop”

Not only are the same chords used over and over in worship music, there is also a single chord progression “loop” that is used constantly! We’ll revisit the Number System and bust the code of this worship loop so you can use it to make learning songs even easier.

Lesson 4: LORD Method

This trick is the one that always makes the biggest difference for my worship piano students. It is so simple, yet fits in worship music and makes you sound like a professional keys player instantly!

Lesson 5: EVERY Chord

We’ve learned the foundations of most modern worship songs, and now we’re going to take things a step further. We’ll learn every possible chord you could need to play in a key, so you’re prepared for every song your team might do.

A young man with glasses and a red and white cap stands in front of a keyboard in a room with a black wall and decorative art. There is a whiteboard to his right and a poster that reads "WAR IS OVER!" behind him. A plant with broad green leaves is in the lower left corner.

Lesson 6: Builds/Dynamics

Most worship songs have similar patterns for how each instrument builds and complements the entire worship team. We’ll walk through the exact template for what you should play and when to make a song feel powerful and to fit in with the worship band mix.

A person writing on a notepad at a music production workspace with a laptop, studio speakers, headphones, and a MIDI controller keyboard. On a monitor, a mirrored image shows the person playing the keyboard.

Lesson 7: Using Software

You may have noticed big worship teams with laptops controlling their keyboards. The software keys setup can get complex and confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ll walk through how to use software to make incredible sounds without breaking the bank or losing your mind!

A man in a black shirt standing beside a keyboard and laptop computer, with a digital display of piano chords and finger placements on the screen. There is a whiteboard with handwritten notes about guitar chord shortcuts and inversions, and a decorative mirror and plant in the background.

Lesson 8: Spontaneous

A lot of modern worship teams have spontaneous moments, where you play off the chord chart (like improv). This can be intimidating, but there are simple tips and tricks for how to play spontaneously with ease. We’ll even get into tactics for learning to play by ear.

A person wearing glasses and a baseball cap standing next to a whiteboard with a diagram labeled 'Worship Loop' and a keyboard overlay. To the left, a chart of common guitar chords with columns for keys and corresponding chords highlighted in red.

Lesson 9: First Setlist

Now we’ll tie together all these concepts and actually work on your very first setlist! I’ll work with you from the very first step of getting a setlist and how to properly prepare and practice, and then I’ll even hop on acoustic so you can play the full setlist for real!
